  • Local Chapter Expansion

Just over a year ago, we launched our very first local chapter on the Central Coast of NSW. Today we are so proud to have rolled out 16 others around Australia with the help of our amazing volunteer host network. But we are not stopping there…we have big plans to double the number of chapters in 2016!

Our vision is for the local chapter events to support business mums in their local community. We want to encourage and equip them to take what they learn in our online community and use it to dig deeper with the Start Up Mum community they have right where they live.  Being mums in business ourselves, we know how challenging it can be to get to events when you have children. Which is why all our events are child friendly and at times that can fit in with school drop offs and toddler sleeps.

So stay tuned for exciting local chapter launches over the coming year and make sure you join and support your local chapter. You can find a full list of current local chapters here.

If you have an interest in being a volunteer host and leading a local chapter, please register your interest.

In May, Start Up Mum expanded to South Australia with the launch of the Local Chapter for Adelaide. Hosted by Kath Mardon, the first mumthly catch up morning saw six business mums came along to Whipped in Semaphore.

  • Supporting women in business around the world

Start Up Mum is a proud supporter of the work of Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

Since we started our Kiva team, we have already contributed funding to a number of women in business. Today, we added Jennifer Vanessa to our list. Jennifer is a single mother with a three-year-old daughter from Managua, Nicaragua in North America. She earns a living making food and soups on the weekends, and she also offers a new service, selling smoothies made of natural fruits. She has the support of her aunt, who helps her in the business and cares for her daughter, after Jennifer’s mother passed away three years ago.  Jennifer, with the spirit to get ahead, is applying for the loan to buy products to increase the number of plates of food she prepares. With this investment, her goal is to increase her sales, which will allow her to generate more income from her sales, helping her to obtain a better quality of life with her family.

    Jennifer Vanessa

Help us to continue to support women just like Jennifer by joining our Kiva team with as little as a $25 donation.

  • Do you have a big enough why?

Most people are too focused on the what and the how of what their goals are and never give much thought, if any, to the why.

Having a why makes sure your goals become real. Your why needs to be big enough so that it gives you motivation and keeps you hungry for your goal.

For example, my why for starting my own business was so that I could work from home and spend more time with my daughter. But you can also dig deeper than that by asking why do I want to spend more time with my daughter? Your first why might only just scratch the surface so keeping asking why till you get to the reason that makes your heart sing.

“You must define your why before you can begin with the what and the how

    – Maria Reyes-McDavis

Ask yourself the following questions to help you get clear on your why:

    • What’s your REASON?
    • What’s your PURPOSE?
    • What’s your INTENTION?
    • What’s the POINT?

What’s your why? If you are not making the progress you feel you should be making, maybe you haven’t inspired yourself with a good enough reason why you want it.

    HAVE YOUR SAY

Do you have a big enough why? Drop it in a comment below and share them.
